With two photographic series, Rot (1974) and Viva España (1976–1979), Jürgen Klauke cofounded what art historians later dubbed Body Art. In his frontal self-portraits his body is staged in a way that interrogates traditional gender norms, particularly those concerning the personae of male artists. His studio photography explores the virtually unlimited possibilities of corporal expression in front of the camera, by playing with other human bodies and various utensils and accessories, with no fear of the ensuing irritations and surprises. *1943, lives and works in Cologne
